Joost PH Drenth is a gastroenterologist and professor of Hepatology with the Department of Gastroenterology and Hepatology of the Amsterdam University Medical Center, The Netherlands. He received his medical degree from the University of Maastricht was trained as a Gastroenterologist at the Radboud University Medical Center and was head of the Department of Gastroenterology and Hepatology (2010-2023). He obtained his PhD (with honors) on a study of a rare autoinflammatory syndrome: hyper-IgD syndrome. Prof Drenth was research fellow at the National Institutes of Health, Bethesda USA (2002-2004). He became Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians, London in 2016, and member of the Academia Europaea in 2017. Prof. Drenth has a long term research interest in rare (inherited liver) diseases. During his scientific career he discovered genes for autoinflammatory diseases, inherited pancreatitis, and polycystic liver disease. He focuses on. He initiated >50 rigorous clinical trials in many rare diseases such as hereditary angiodysplasias, autoimmune disorders, polycystic liver disease, polycystic kidney disease amongst others. This opened up the road for novel treatment options for rare disease patients. Prof Drenth is the Editor-in-Chief of the UEG journal (Journal Impact Factor 6.9).
